I loved reading to my children before bed. Our bedtime ritual of reading will remain in my heart as some of my favorite times with my children. It was a great time to bond with them and open the world to them. I also loved watching how good children’s books sparked their imaginations and enlivened their play.
Therefore, I am very excited to announce that Birth and Beyond Pediatrics has been approved to be the first pediatric practice in south Tulsa to partner with the Reach Out and Read program!
In June 2014, the American Academy of Pediatrics declared literacy promotion to be an “essential component of pediatric care” for all children. Reach Out and Read was developed to help parents learn, during their child’s regular pediatric visits, the importance of reading to children. The goal is to help children gain early literacy skills—the building blocks to success in school–by encouraging families to read together.
Parents are a child’s first and best teacher. Studies have shown that children who are read to from an early age by their parents and caregivers have a much better chance of becoming successful readers and doing well in school. And, it is never too early to start reading to your child! Even infants benefit from being read to.
Reading to your child is not only a wonderful way to prepare your child for school, it is also creates strong bonds between you and your child. Snuggled up with your child and a good book helps your child feel safe and cared for.
We are proud to bring the Reach Out and Read program to our Birth and Beyond patients. What can you expect from the program?
- We will have a literacy-rich environment in our office, which will include such things as gently used books in the waiting room and advice on the techniques of reading to young children.
- We will be discussing with you the importance of reading to your child, starting in infancy.
- We will provide your child a new book to take home at every regular pediatric checkup from age 6 months to 5 years.
Since books are the cornerstone of this program, we invite you to donate gently used children’s books to our office library. You can also bring a book to your next pediatric appointment, leave it on the shelf and take a different book home: “Bring one, take one, read one!”
We hope you are as excited as we are to start this wonderful program. Keep reading!
